[admin] Remix 8: Magic 8 Ball: qualifying fandoms

Magic 8 Ball Says: REPLY HAZY, TRY AGAIN

While trying to iron out the details for the big move to AO3, we discovered some things we should clarify before sign-ups go live. Now that Remix/Redux 8 has been announced, it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

First, just to clarify: to qualify in a fandom you must have written at least five (5) stories of 500 words or more, or a minimum of seven (7) stories of 100 words or more in that fandom. These numbers must exclude previous remixes, and co-written stories. This means that if an author has six (6) Supernatural stories of 100 words, and another two in that fandom of 500 words, that author would qualify in Supernatural. However, if the same author has four (4) Merlin stories of 500 words, and one (1) that is only 400 words, that author would not qualify in the Merlin fandom. This is the same rule as last year, and will not be changing.

Now, however, is your chance to expand our 40 currently qualifying fandoms. The list for Remix 7 can be found at last year's sign-up form. (Please don't submit that form to sign-up for Remix 8, that will be done through AO3 when the time comes.)

It's already been decided that Remix 8 will see the addition of DCU, NCIS, NCIS LA, and the split of new and old Doctor Who. So there's no need to push for those. On the other hand, we are currently on the fence about adding Sherlock Holmes, Glee, and White Collar.

Before making your suggestions you should keep in mind that fandoms that would qualify for [info]yuletide are going to be too small for our use. (As an example, [info]musesfool, [info]laurificus, and I all qualify and are willing to write in Ocean's 11, but it's still too small for remix.) Because of the nature of remix, for a fandom to qualify, we must have plenty of people who qualify and are willing to write in it. Because of this, we ask that you only suggest fandoms if you are planning to sign-up for Remix 8 and also qualify in that fandom. And remember to get others who qualify and are planning to sign-up to comment and support your suggestion, so we know what kind of interest and crowd we'll have for it.

Disclaimer: of course, this post is simply to poll interest and is not binding to you or the mods.

Since DCU was added, would you consider changing X-Men Comicsverse to Marvel Comics in general? I would qualify for either, but there tends to be a lot of overlap with X-Men and other Marvel stories, and it might make things easier.

We'll take that into consideration.

Re: SHERLOCK HOLMES

I would love it if Sherlock Holmes was included! I would definitely sign up to remix, and depending on when the fest is, I may have enough fics to qualify to be remixed.

(I've posted on several Holmes comms asking people to vote!)

Re: GLEE

I don't qualify in it, but from what I've seen, Glee is a pretty huge fandom and might not qualify for Yuletide next year 'cause of it, so it might be good to include it.

I honestly have no idea where this falls comparatively in fandom-size, but I would totally love it (and would qualify for) Dollhouse.

May I suggest Sarah Jane Adventures?

And on that note, how does one count crossovers between classic and new Doctor Who or Doctor Who and its spinoffs when figuring qualifying stories?

[info]laurificus

February 15 2010, 02:44:46 UTC 2 years ago

Crossovers between old and new Who, or Who and its spinoffs won't count as qualifying stories. They're similar, I know, but since we're listing them as separate fandoms, and since it's reasonable that someone might know only the source for one fandom, we have to treat them the way we do the other remix fandoms, which means no crossovers.

Thanks for the Sarah Jane suggestion!

Can I suggest Merlin actors RPF? There's been quite a lot of it over the past year, as evidenced by the traffic on [info]merlinrpf.

I suppose you could lump it in with Merlin, but there are quite a lot of Merlin writers who don't write RPF & a smaller number of Merlin RPF writers who don't write Merlin, so I'm not sure how well that would work :-/

[info]angelgazing

February 15 2010, 05:13:08 UTC 2 years ago

Merlin and Merlin RPF will not be lumped together because, as you said, many Merlin writers don't write RPF. Merlin RPF will have to qualify on its own merits to be a qualifying fandom.

I have a question about Sherlock Holmes, would it be book canon, movie canon, or both?

Right now we aren't planning to make a distinction between movie and book canon. :)

MAy I suggest to split the JE fandom? As with New and Classic Who, many people are not familiar with the other bands. Most of us write mostly in one or two at most. Getting a Kanjani8 writer if you're a NEWS author is a nightmare.

[info]mousapelli

February 16 2010, 02:28:09 UTC 2 years ago

*handles the JE/DBSK stuff for [info]musesfool*

The way we dealt with it last year was to require that if you signed up for JE, that you could write at least one of the three most popular groups: KAT-TUN, NEWS, or Arashi. This was based on which bands seemed to have the most fic in general. I suppose we could narrow it even further to just KAT-TUN/NEWS because in my experience those two bands have the most crossover of authors, and Arashi is kind of an outlier.

The problem with splitting them is that once you start doing that, there's no clear place to stop. Person A does just NEWS, person B does just Arashi, person C does just Kis-My-Ft2, and suddenly nobody's fandom is large enough to do remix really.

The truth is that Remix is inherently a multi-fandom exchange, and authors need to have a certain amount of flexibility within their fandoms. It's exactly the same as if I'm an HP author who only writes Remus/Sirius, and I get assigned an all-Death-Eater author (which has happened to me). JE, really, is all one big fandom, even if some authors might fixate on just one batch of 'characters.'

I know lots of authors who get an assignment they weren't prepared for in Remix, and end up writing characters or pairings that they've never written before. Some authors are comfortable with the challenge and a certain level of uncertainty in matching, and if other authors aren't, no hard feelings, but maybe Remix isn't for them.

On the other hand, things might change a bit if 50 Kanjani8 authors suddenly want to sign up, but that's not a problem we've had so far.

How about the addition of Naruto as a fandom. It's huge, and it gives those of us who primarily write anime/manga another choice.

[info]musesfool

February 15 2010, 23:49:02 UTC 2 years ago

We had Naruto on the list in the past and nobody offered it and it was hard to match for the one person who offered/requested it. If you can recruit a bunch of people to comment here and say that they qualify in it and plan to participate, we'll consider adding it.

February 22 2010, 12:52:53 UTC 2 years ago

Can I suggest Legend of the Seeker? I'm not sure what the fandom size is like, but I know I'm only a couple fics shy of qualifying for it.

[info]tobu_ishi

February 25 2010, 08:25:08 UTC 2 years ago

I realize the post is closed, but it would be bloody tragic if this challenge accidentally shut out the anime fandom again. (And if Inuyasha and Yami no Matsuei were your test fandoms, someone has been giving you rather poor advice.)

I'd like to suggest Fullmetal Alchemist and Avatar: The Last Airbender. They're huge, active ficcing fandoms; I qualify for both, several times over; and I can supply plenty of interested parties if you'd like.
